Pleasant Grove is a city located in Utah County, Utah, United States north of Provo. According to recent population estimates, Pleasant Grove has over 40,000 residents, making it one of the larger cities in Utah County.

Population and Demographics

As of the 2020 census, the population of Pleasant Grove was 40,482. This makes Pleasant Grove the 9th largest city in Utah. The city has grown rapidly in recent decades. In 1990, the population was just 16,297, so it has more than doubled in the past 30 years.

The racial makeup of Pleasant Grove is predominantly white. As of the 2010 census, 90% of residents identified as white, 1% as Black or African American, less than 1% as Native American, 1% Asian, and 5% as two or more races. About 10% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

The median age in Pleasant Grove is 26.5 years. There are many young families living in the city, with nearly 35% of the population under the age of 18. Pleasant Grove also has a significant senior population, with about 10% over the age of 65.

History of Pleasant Grove

Pleasant Grove was first settled in 1850. The original settlers were Mormon pioneers looking for places to establish new colonies. They were drawn to the area because of its groves of trees and availability of water from local creeks. The abundant trees and water led to the name Pleasant Grove.

One of the early settlers in Pleasant Grove was John Harvey Goff. He built a cabin along Battle Creek and became the first postmaster in 1854 when Pleasant Grove's first post office was established. The Goff House still stands today as a museum operated by the Pleasant Grove Historical Society.

Pleasant Grove was officially incorporated as a city in 1862. In its early days, the economy was driven by agriculture with orchards, field crops, livestock ranches, and dairy farms. The city continued to grow steadily through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In the 1950s, as the Provo-Orem area became more urbanized, Pleasant Grove transitioned to being a suburban residential community.
