With a population of over 97,000 as of 2020, Orem, Utah is the largest city in Utah County and the 5th largest in the state of Utah. Nestled at the base of Mount Timpanogos in north-central Utah, Orem has established itself as a hub for education, business, and recreation.

History

Orem was founded in 1877 by a group of pioneers looking to expand outwards from neighboring Provo. It was originally known as Sharon, but was soon renamed Orem after Walter Orem, the man who ran the railroad station and mail service in the area. Pioneer settlers were drawn to the area for its abundant water sources and fertile soil.

For many years Orem remained primarily an agricultural community. However, with the establishment of nearby Geneva Steel Mill in the 1940s, the city began to expand rapidly. As the steel mill brought more jobs and infrastructure to the area, Orem transitioned into a growing suburban community.

In the 1970s, construction began on the I-15 freeway through Orem, connecting it with the larger metropolitan areas of Salt Lake City and Provo. This improved access led to more commercial development, including the University Mall that opened in 1973. With easy access to both jobs and shopping, Orem's population boomed.

Today, Orem continues to be one of Utah's fastest growing cities. It has established itself as a hub for technology companies and continues to attract residents looking for an affordable, family-friendly community. The city government remains focused on responsibly managing Orem's rapid expansion through strategic development and urban planning.
