Wells wished to establish a self-sufficient an personal town funded through his private businesses. Kearns was initially known as West Jordan.

History

Kearns was originally known as West Jordan. In 1871, Utah's third governor Heber Manning Wells wanted to establish a self-sufficient and personal town funded through his private businesses. Wells established a gristmill, lumberyards, and other businesses in West Jordan to support his town.

The town was renamed Kearns in honor of Thomas Kearns. Kearns was a United States Senator from Utah who owned silver mines in the area. In 1937, Salt Lake County created the Kearns Town District.
