Wylie was founded in 1886 and named after W.D. Wylie, who had the town platted. He built the first school in Wylie in 1875 along with a temporary railroad depot in 1886. The town grew slowly but steadily through the early 1900s, until it was impacted by the Great Depression and suffered a period of economic decline. After World War II, Wylie began growing again as people moved to the suburbs. In 1970, Wylie was incorporated with a population of only 2,350 people. Since then, the population has skyrocketed, more than doubling between 2000 and 2010.
