Waxahachie was founded in 1850 as the county seat of Ellis County. It is located on an early settlement site with Native American roots, evidenced by numerous arrowheads and artifacts discovered in the area. The city's name comes from the Native American term "Wah-shah-shee," meaning "cow" or "buffalo." Settlers and developers arrived in the region following Texas independence and Indian removal treaties of the 1840s.
