History of Sugar Land

The area that is now known as Sugar Land has a history stretching back to the early 19th century. In 1853, Samuel May Williams acquired 4,000 acres of land along Oyster Creek and established a sugar plantation worked by African slaves. After the Civil War, the plantation was acquired by Edward H. Cunningham and Littlebury Ellis, who established the Sugar Land plantation and began growing and refining sugar on a large scale. This industry gave Sugar Land its name.

In 1906, Isaac Kempner, Sr. of the Imperial Sugar Company purchased the Ellis Plantation and continued sugar refining operations. Sugar Land grew as a company town around the sugar refinery, which operated until 2003. Sugar Land incorporated as a general law city in 1959, electing T.E. Harman as its first mayor. As the sugar industry declined, the city began to diversify economically and attract new residents and businesses, becoming a major suburb of Houston.
