Socorro is a city located in El Paso County in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population of Socorro was 34,024 making it the 16th largest city in the El Paso metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1598 by Spanish explorer Juan de Oñate and was originally named Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción de los Piros de Socorro del Sur. Socorro is known for its rich history and access to outdoor recreation. Major attractions include the Rio Bosque Wetlands Park and the Socorro Mission.

History

Socorro was founded in 1598 by Spanish explorer Juan de Oñate who stopped along the Rio Grande on his way to New Mexico. He named the settlement Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción de los Piros de Socorro del Sur. The mission San Miguel de Socorro was established there in 1626. While Socorro was part of New Spain, attacks from indigenous tribes were common. The settlement was nearly abandoned at one point but later rebuilt with a fortified plaza in 1841. Socorro became part of Mexico after it gained independence from Spain in 1821. After the Mexican-American War ended in 1848, Socorro became part of the United States. The racial makeup of Socorro is 95.1% Hispanic or Latino, 2.4% White, 0.9% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 0.2% Pacific Islander. The median household income is $48,750 which is below the state average. Around 18.3% of the population lives below the poverty line.
