History

Sherman was founded in 1846 by General Sidney Sherman, who was a hero of the Texas Revolution. It was originally called Shermantown but was later shortened to Sherman. The city served as a rest stop for migrants heading west during the California Gold Rush and was also part of the frontier outpost system designed to protect settlers from Native American attacks.

During the Civil War, Sherman was occupied by Confederate troops and faced attacks from Union forces. The city's railroad infrastructure and location near the Red River made it strategically important. After the war, Sherman rebuilt and continued to grow into a regional economic center built on manufacturing and agriculture.
