Schertz is a city in Guadalupe and Bexar counties in the U.S. state of Texas, located northeast of Downtown San Antonio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 40,673 making it the 2nd largest city in Guadalupe County. The city is located next to Cibolo and Universal City and is part of the rapidly growing northeast urban center of San Antonio.

History

Schertz was established in 1899 as a stop on the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway line. The city was named for William Schertz, a director of the railroad line. The community grew slowly until the 1940s when the establishment of the San Antonio Air Depot brought an influx of new residents. Schertz was incorporated in 1958 with a population of 2,000.

Demographics and Population

As of the 2020 census, Schertz had a population of 40,673. This makes it the 228th most populous city in Texas. The racial makeup of the city was 73.1% White, 8.5% African American, 1.2% Native American, 2.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 10.5% from other races, and 3.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 38.6% of the population.

Over the past few decades, Schertz has experienced rapid population growth. Between 2000 and 2010, the population grew by 117% from 18,694 to 40,517 residents. The population has continued to grow since 2010 as well. The city's convenient location near San Antonio and proximity to major employers has fueled this growth.

Pioneer Village Living History Center

One of Schertz's most popular attractions is Pioneer Village Living History Center. This 10-acre outdoor museum features over 40 historic buildings and structures dating from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s. Costumed interpreters demonstrate pioneer crafts and daily activities. The village aims to educate visitors on what life was like for the German immigrants who originally settled Schertz and the surrounding area.

Schertz Park System

Transportation

Schertz enjoys excellent transportation access. Interstate 35 runs through the western side of the city, connecting it to San Antonio and Austin. State Highway 3009 (FM 3009) also connects Schertz to San Antonio and its international airport. The city is served by VIA Metropolitan Transit bus service and Amtrak trains.
