San Angelo is a city located in Tom Green County in west central Texas. With a population of 101,176 as of 2020, it is the principal city and county seat of Tom Green County. San Angelo lies at the confluence of the North, South, and Middle Concho Rivers.

History

San Angelo was founded in the late 1800s and soon became an important center for the cattle trade. It was initially known as “Santa Angela” after the Catholic parish established by Bartholomew J. DeWitt in 1882. The name was eventually shortened to San Angelo. The arrival of the railroads in 1888 helped establish San Angelo as a regional trading center. San Angelo experienced rapid growth in the early 1900s due to ample underground water resources that supported agriculture and livestock operations. Oil was discovered in 1928, bringing additional jobs and industry to the city.

Fort Concho National Historic Landmark

Fort Concho was founded in 1867 by the United States Army to protect settlers, mail coaches, and travelers along the Overland Trail. Today, 23 original buildings have been preserved and restored. Living history demonstrations by period re-enactors show what life was like at the fort.
