History of Rosenberg

Rosenberg was founded in 1883 when the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway came through the area. The city was named after Henry Rosenberg of Galveston, who had donated $500 towards the construction of the first railroad station. The area was previously known as Dresden prior to the establishment of the city.

Rosenberg quickly became an important railroad junction and saw expansion with the discovery of oil in the early 20th century. Rosenberg grew from a population of 200 in 1883 to over 2,000 by 1904. The Rosenberg Library was constructed in 1904, serving as one of the first free public libraries in Texas.

Over the decades, Rosenberg continued to grow steadily as a center of ranching, farming, and oil production. The construction of U.S. Route 59 in 1941 further improved linkages to Houston and Victoria. After peaking at a population of approximately 8,400 in 1960, Rosenberg's population declined until around 1990 when it began to grow once again.

Today, Rosenberg retains its historic small town charm while continuing to grow as an attractive suburb within the expanding Houston metro area. Many of its historic buildings, such as Fort Bend County Courthouse and Rosenberg Railroad Depot, have been preserved.
