Richardson is a city located in Dallas and Collin counties in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 119,037 making it the 39th most populous city in Texas. Richardson is a inner suburb of Dallas and home to the University of Texas at Dallas and the Telecom Corridor, an area known for high-technology companies.

History

Richardson was founded in 1873 by settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. It was named after railroad contractor E.H. Richardson, who agreed to lay the tracks and provide the right-of-way for the Houston and Texas Central Railway. The city incorporated in 1925 with a population of approximately 600. The city grew rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s as the suburb of Dallas expanded northward. Richardson's population reached 100,000 in 1990. According to the 2020 census, Richardson had a population of 119,037 making it the 39th most populous city in Texas. The racial makeup of Richardson is 61.3% White, 17.4% Asian, 11.3% African American, 0.1% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 6.4% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. 24.4% of the total population is Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Charles W. Eisemann Center for Performing Arts

The Eisemann Center is a multi-venue performing arts center located in downtown Richardson. It opened in 2002 and hosts theater, dance and music performances. Cottonwood Art Festival

The Cottonwood Art Festival is an annual spring arts festival held in Cottonwood Park in Richardson. The juried show features the original works of over 240 artists. In addition to visual art, the festival includes musical performances, food, and family activities. The Cottonwood Art Festival began in 1972 and draws over 100,000 visitors annually. The Richardson Independent School District serves most of Richardson. RISD has 55 campuses including 38 elementary schools, 11 middle schools, 5 high schools, and 1 alternative high school. Richardson is served by Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) which provides public bus and light rail service.
