With a population of 54,815 as of the 2020 census, Port Arthur is a mid-sized city located in southeast Texas along the Gulf Coast. It is the largest city in Jefferson County and part of the Beaumont–Port Arthur metropolitan area. Port Arthur has a rich history and is home to many landmarks and attractions.

History

Port Arthur was founded in 1898 by Arthur Edward Stilwell and named after himself. Stilwell envisioned the city as a seaport for carrying cargo along the inland waterways of Texas. The city experienced rapid growth after oil was discovered in the region in 1901. Port Arthur flourished in the early 1900s as a center of oil refining and shipping and was once one of the most prosperous cities in Texas. Port Arthur is governed by a Council-Manager form of government with a mayor and six council members. The current mayor of Port Arthur is Thurman "Bill" Bartie. The City Council meets every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 4:30 PM at Port Arthur City Hall.

Sabine Pass Lighthouse

The Sabine Pass Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse located at the mouth of the Sabine River. It was built in 1857 by the US government to guide ships through the pass. During the Civil War, it was the site of the Battle of Sabine Pass. Today the lighthouse is open for tours and managed by the Texas Historical Commission.
