History

The area that is now McAllen was first settled in 1904 when John McAllen and his son James donated land for a railroad station. By 1911, the town was established and named for the McAllen family. After World War II, McAllen began to transition to a more urban economy and saw rapid population growth. Today, it remains a vibrant hub of international trade, agriculture, healthcare, retail, and entertainment in the Rio Grande Valley.
