History

Killeen was founded in 1882 by the Santa Fe Railroad as a water stop and terminal. It was named after Frank P. Killeen, the assistant general manager of the railroad. The city continued to grow as a railroad shipping point for local farm products like cotton, wool, and beef.

In 1942, Camp Hood (renamed Fort Hood in 1950) was established east of Killeen as a military training post for the United States Army during World War II. The influx of soldiers dramatically increased Killeen's population from about 1,300 to over 80,000 in just a few years. After the war, many military personnel returned to Killeen and it continued to thrive as a military town supporting Fort Hood.
