History of Grand Prairie

The city of Grand Prairie was first established in 1863. It was originally called "Dechman" after Alexander McRae Dechman who had received the land as a land grant. In 1887, the town name was changed to Grand Prairie.

One of the key factors in Grand Prairie's early growth and development was the arrival of the railroad. The Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad (MKT or Katy) set up operations in 1881 and helped with the transport of goods and people to the agricultural areas around Dallas County.

Cotton was a major part of the economy in early Grand Prairie. The town had a cotton gin, gristmill and a brickyard for manufacturing. During World War I, Grand Prairie had an aviation training ground which brought more people and business opportunities.

Grand Prairie continued to grow in population and economic prosperity after World War II and through the 1950s. It officially became a city in 1959. Major corporations and employers established headquarters or regional offices in Grand Prairie which bought jobs and economic growth.
