Georgetown is a city in Williamson County, Texas, United States with a population of over 70,000 residents as of 2018. It is the county seat of Williamson County and is part of the Austin metropolitan area. Georgetown has experienced rapid growth in recent years due to its proximity to Austin and Round Rock.

History

Georgetown was founded in 1848 by Father George Calhoun and named after him. The city was incorporated in 1871. Georgetown was an agrarian community for many years, with cotton gins and mills supporting the local economy. In the 1970s, Georgetown began to transition to a more suburban city as Austin expanded.

Transportation

Georgetown is served by the Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Capital Metro), which provides bus services to parts of the city. However, Georgetown lacks much of the mass transit infrastructure found in Austin.

The main highway serving Georgetown is Interstate 35, which runs through the western part of the city. Other major roads include State Highway 195, State Highway 29, FM 971 and FM 1460.

Public education in Georgetown is provided by the Georgetown Independent School District (Georgetown ISD). Georgetown ISD has 15 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, and 2 high schools. In addition, Southwestern University is a private Methodist liberal arts college located in Georgetown.
