Edinburg is a city located in Hidalgo County in the Rio Grande Valley of southern Texas. With a population of over 90,000 as of the 2020 census, Edinburg is the county seat and largest city in Hidalgo County.

According to the 2020 census, Edinburg has a population of 90,034 people. This makes it the 14th largest city in the Rio Grande Valley metropolitan area. The racial makeup of the city is 88.4% Hispanic or Latino, 8.3% White, 1.5% Black or African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.9% Asian, and 0.5% from two or more races.

History of Edinburg

Edinburg was founded in 1908 alongside the construction of the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway. It was named after prominent Scottish American businessman John Young, whose nickname was "Edinburg". The town was officially incorporated in 1919.

Early growth in Edinburg came from agriculture, especially the citrus and vegetable farming industries. In the 1920s, Edinburg became the county seat for the newly created Hidalgo County. The city continued to grow in population and economic prominence over the 20th century. Today it is a hub for education, government, commerce, and healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley.
