History

Denton was established in 1857 by John B. Denton, for whom the city is named. Denton served as county seat of Denton County beginning in 1857. The arrival of two colleges, as well as the introduction of railroad service in 1881, greatly expanded the city's population and economy toward the end of the 19th century.
