Channelview is a city in Harris County, Texas, United States. The population was 38,289 at the 2010 census. Channelview is located on the northeast bank of the San Jacinto River, 20 miles (32 km) east of Downtown Houston.

Channelview, originally named McDermott after settlers Alexander and John McDermott, is located at the juncture of Interstate 10 and State Highway 146, six miles (10 km) south of the intersection of the San Jacinto River and the Houston Ship Channel, and four miles (6 km) north of Galena Park.

History

The town was established in 1908. A post office was established in the town in 1909. Population growth began in the mid-1930s as a result of production at the nearby DuPont chemical plant. The community was originally known as McDermott after John W. McDermott who in 1894 had purchased 10,000 acres of land in the area from the Austin family to facilitate rice farming. The main road through town was then known as McDermott Road.

In 1941 the town voted to change its name to Channelview. The derivation of the name Channelview is disputed. Some say it was so named because of the view of the Houston Ship Channel from the town. Others claim it originated from the billing address of the Dupont chemical plant which was stamped Channelview.

The farming tradition of Channelview led to the first public library being located in the Guadalupe Cruz's general store. During World War II German prisoners of war worked in the rice fields. In the 1950s the town became a popular place for drag racing. A racetrack operated outside the town and held various national competitions.
