Cedar Hill is a city in Dallas and Ellis counties in the U.S. state of Texas. It is located approximately 16 miles southwest of downtown Dallas and had a population of 48,205 as of the 2020 census, making it one of the top 100 largest cities in Texas.

History

Cedar Hill was first settled in 1846 by a small community of pioneers. It was originally called Hill County, but was later renamed Cedar Hill after the cedar trees that populated the area. The city grew slowly over the next few decades as more settlers moved to the area. In 1872, Cedar Hill's first post office opened for operation. Ten years later in 1882, the town applied for incorporation but was unable to meet the population requirement.
