Burleson is a city in Johnson and Tarrant counties in the U.S. state of Texas, located near Fort Worth. As of the 2020 census, the population was 51,567 making it one of the fastest-growing cities in North Texas. The city is known for its Texan roots, family-friendly amenities, and close proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area.

History

Burleson was founded in 1881 when the Texas and Pacific Railway was extended to the area. It was named for Edward Burleson, a general and statesman in the Texas Revolution. The city was incorporated in 1912 and adopted the Council-Manager form of government in 1948.

For most of the 20th century, Burleson remained a small railroad town. But since the 1970s, it has experienced rapid suburban growth as part of the DFW Metroplex. New residents were attracted by the low cost of living, highly-rated schools, and family-friendly parks.

Today, Burleson retains much of its small-town charm and community spirit while also offering modern amenities. Old Town Burleson in particular has maintained the city's historic character.

According to the 2020 census, Burleson has a population of 51,567 residents. This makes it the 132nd most populous city in Texas. The population density is 1,532 people per square mile.

Government

Burleson has a Council-Manager form of government. The city council consists of the mayor and six council members who enact legislation and appoint city officials. The city manager oversees day-to-day municipal operations.
