Brownsville is a city located in the southernmost tip of Texas in Cameron County along the Rio Grande river across from Matamoros, Mexico. As of the 2020 census, Brownsville has a population of 183,392 making it one of the largest cities in the Rio Grande Valley metropolitan area.

History

Brownsville was founded in 1848 by Charles Stillman after he purchased land in the area and named it Brownsville after Major Jacob Brown who fought and died during the Mexican-American War. It was designated as a county seat of Cameron County in 1849. Brownsville quickly grew as a major port city and saw battles during the Civil War. In the early 1900s, irrigation transformed the area's agriculture. The city saw population growth in the late 20th century from immigration and tourism.
