Baytown, Texas is a city located on the northern shore of Galveston Bay in Harris County, southeast Texas. With a population of over 75,000, Baytown is the second largest city in the county after Houston. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area.

Baytown got its start in the early 1900s as three separate towns - Goose Creek, Pelly, and East Baytown - that eventually merged to form one city. The first settler in the area was Betsy Scott, who received a land grant in 1824 and established a homestead along Goose Creek. The creek (which runs through modern-day Baytown) would later inspire the name of the Goose Creek Oil Field, one of the most prolific oil fields in Texas history and a major driver of Baytown's 20th-century economy.

Today, Baytown's economy still revolves heavily around oil, but also includes petrochemicals, maritime activity, aerospace, healthcare, and tourism. Major employers in Baytown include ExxonMobil, Chevron Phillips Chemical, Port of Houston, Philips Healthcare, and the Lee College. The San Jacinto Monument, located east of Baytown, commemorates the Battle of San Jacinto which ended the Texas Revolution.

History of Baytown

The history of Baytown began in the early 1820s when settlers first arrived in the area along the banks of Goose Creek. One of the earliest homesteads was established by Betsy Scott, who received a land grant in 1824. Other early settlers included members of the Link family, who operated ferry crossings along Goose Creek.

In the late 1860s, the discovery of oil nearby spurred development in the Goose Creek area. The first oil refinery was built in 1908 by the Texas Company (later Texaco). In 1919, two other towns on the bayshore - Pelly and East Baytown - were established. The three towns merged in 1948 to form the city of Baytown.
