Rapid City is a city located in western South Dakota in the foothills of the Black Hills. With a population of around 75,000, it is the second largest city in South Dakota after Sioux Falls and serves as the cultural and economic center of the region. Often called the "Gateway to the Black Hills", Rapid City provides easy access to popular destinations like Mount Rushmore National Memorial and the Black Hills National Forest.

History

The Rapid City area has a long history. Archaeologists have uncovered evidence that Native Americans inhabited the region as far back as 2500 BC. By the late 18th century, the Arikara, Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Lakota tribes all had claims to the Black Hills region where Rapid City is located. White settlers began arriving in the 1870s after gold was discovered in the nearby Black Hills in 1874. Rapid City was officially incorporated in 1876, the same year as the Battle of the Little Bighorn between the Lakota and the U.S. Army led by George Custer.

In the early 20th century, Rapid City became an important regional transportation hub and commercial center. The discovery of large mammoth fossils nearby also fueled paleontological research and tourism. Like many cities, Rapid City experienced boom and bust cycles related to natural resource development in the area. The construction of dams along the Cheyenne River in the 1950s spurred further growth. Recently, Rapid City has diversified its economy through health care, education, manufacturing, and tourism. The city continues to serve as the major urban center of western South Dakota.
