Woonsocket is a city in Providence County, Rhode Island with a population of 41,246 as of the 2020 census. Woonsocket lies directly south of the state's capital and largest city, Providence.

History

Woonsocket was first settled in the 1670s and originally part of Providence Plantations. The early settlement was destroyed during King Philips War in 1676. After the war ended, the area was resettled in the 1680s. Woonsocket was incorporated as a town in 1867 and then as a city in 1888.
