Warwick is a city in Kent County, Rhode Island, United States. As of the 2020 census, Warwick had a population of 80,977, making it the second largest city in Rhode Island. The city is located approximately 12 miles south of downtown Providence.

History

Warwick was founded in 1642 by Samuel Gorton when he purchased the land from the Narragansett and Shawomet Indians. It was originally named Shawomet Purchase and was incorporated as a town in 1648. In 1913, the town was incorporated as a city and was renamed Warwick after the Earl of Warwick in England.

The racial makeup of the city was 88.7% White, 3.6% Black or African American, 0.1% Native American, 4.6% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 5.6% of the population.
