History

Providence was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams, a Reformed Baptist theologian. Williams was banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony for his advocacy of religious freedom and separation of church and state. He named the area Providence Plantations in recognition of God's providence which brought him there.

In its early history, Providence relied on agriculture, fishing and trade. The city became a shipping hub and center of manufacturing, helped by its location near the Blackstone River. Providence grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century.
