History

Pawtucket was originally inhabited by the Wampanoag people. In 1671, the area was purchased by Joseph Jenks who established the first forge in America for producing brass and iron goods. He named the area after the Algonquian word for "river fall."

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Pawtucket developed into a major center for cotton and textile manufacturing due to its advantageous proximity to the Blackstone River. By the mid-1800s, Pawtucket was home to dozens of mills and foundries. The city experienced rapid population growth as immigrants came to work in the mills. Major employers included the Slater Mill, Dunnell Manufacturing Company, and Jenks Spinning Company. Learn more about Pawtucket's history on the Wikipedia page.
