East Providence is a city in Providence County, Rhode Island with a population of 47,037 as of the 2010 census. It is the fifth largest city in Rhode Island.

History

The area that is now East Providence was inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before European settlement began in the 17th century. Roger Williams, founder of Providence, negotiated with local Narragansett tribes to purchase land for European settlers. East Providence remained largely agricultural until industrialization began along the riverfront in the 19th century.

East Providence incorporated as a town in 1812 before becoming a city in 1958. Its history has been shaped by its location along the Providence River and its proximity to Providence.
