Cumberland is a town in Providence County, Rhode Island with a population of 34,868 as of the 2020 census. Located just north of Providence, Cumberland is known for its historic charm and natural beauty. The town has a rich history dating back to the 17th century.

History of Cumberland

Cumberland was originally settled as part of the ancient Cumberland Plantation, founded in the 1600s. The area was purchased from native tribal chief Canonicus by representatives from the Plymouth Colony.

In 1746, the southern portion of Cumberland broke off to form the town of Woonsocket. In 1828, another section of Cumberland was ceded to form part of the town of Pawtucket.

Historically, Cumberland was an agricultural area with many dairy farms. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, small mills and factories opened along the Blackstone River. Eventually, Cumberland became an important manufacturing center noted for production of woolen cloth, tools, and machinery.
