York, officially the City of York, is a city in and the county seat of York County, Pennsylvania, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city population was 44,118. York is the 11th largest city in Pennsylvania.

History

York was founded in 1741 by settlers from the Philadelphia area and was named for the English city of the same name. By 1777, most of the area residents were of German descent. York was the temporary capital of the United States of America during the Articles of Confederation era, serving from September 30, 1777 to June 27, 1778. In 1789, delegates convened at York to ratify the United States Constitution. York also hosted the Continental Congress for a short time during the American Revolutionary War.
