State College is a home rule municipality and the largest designated place in Centre County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the principal borough of the six municipalities that make up the State College area, the largest settlement in Centre County and one of the principal cities of the greater State College-DuBois, PA Combined Statistical Area with a combined population of 236,577 as of the 2010 United States Census.

In the 2010 census, the borough population was 42,034, and the metropolitan area population was 155,403. State College is best known as the home of Pennsylvania State University, a major public research university established in 1855 that enrolls over 47,000 undergraduate and graduate students at its University Park campus, making it the largest in Pennsylvania.

History

State College was incorporated as a borough on August 29, 1896, and has grown with the college, which was renamed The Pennsylvania State College in 1953. In 1973, the borough was designated as the county seat of Centre County.[1]

The area first settled in 1764 when pioneers and settlers came to Clearfield County. It was originally called Oak Hall and was located near present-day Boalsburg. The Pennsylvania State University's original name was Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania (FHS). Centre County, Pennsylvania was founded in 1800 and Bellefonte, Pennsylvania was the original county seat. After a long debate, the state legislature selected State College to be the new county seat in 1874.[2]

Major growth and development came to State College in the 1950s and 60s with the opening of the University Park airport, addition of several manufacturing plants, and new commercial development like shopping centers and hotels. In the 1970s, State College grew rapidly with the addition of several new residential areas and apartment complexes.[3]

State College is located at 40°47′29′′N 77°51′44′′W (40.791559, −77.862290).[4]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 4.5 square miles (12 km2), all land.

As of the 2020 census, the borough population was 42,106. The population density in 2010 was 9,258.6 people per square mile (3,613.6/km2). There were 12,610 housing units and 5,482 households in the borough in 2010.[5]
