History

Scranton was founded in the early 1800s and experienced growth in the mid-1800s as anthracite coal mining expanded in the area. It was incorporated as a borough in 1856 and as a city in 1866. For a time, Scranton was nicknamed "the Electric City" due to the electric streetcars that operated in the city. It is most famously known as the setting for the television show The Office.
