Penn Hills is a home rule municipality located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania approximately 12 miles northeast of downtown Pittsburgh. With a population of 42,329 as of the 2020 census, it is the second-largest municipality in Allegheny County. According to the 2020 census, Penn Hills had a population of 42,329 making it the second most populous municipality in Allegheny County behind Pittsburgh. The population density was 2,018 people per square mile. The racial makeup of Penn Hills was 59.3% White, 32.8% African American, 0.2% Native American, 3.4% Asian, 0.0% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. In addition, 3.4% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

History

The area now known as Penn Hills was first settled in the 1700s by English, German, and Scotch-Irish frontiersmen. One of the earliest settlers was Michael Ashbaugh who received a grant of land near what is now Verona. The name Penn Hills was adopted in 1958 for this suburban municipality northeast of Pittsburgh which included smaller communities such as Verona, Eastmont, Churchill, Sandy Creek, and Linhart.
