Middletown is a borough in Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 8,901 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Middletown was founded in 1755 along the banks of Swatara Creek, and was originally known as Swatara Ferry. The town later became known as Portsmouth, but was renamed Middletown in 1813 due to another town called Portsmouth existing in Pennsylvania. The town grew rapidly due to its location along the Union Canal. In the early 1900s, several large industries located along the waterfront, including a steel mill and factories manufacturing railroad cars and ice machines. Middletown Public Library

The Middletown Public Library opened in 1903 thanks to funds donated by industrialist Andrew Carnegie. The historic building houses a large collection of books, magazines, DVDs and other materials. It offers programs for adults and children.

Middletown Area Historical Society Museum

This museum explores the rich history of Middletown and the surrounding area through exhibits and artifacts. Visitors can learn about local industries and businesses, historic homes and landmarks, sports history and more. There is also a gift shop with books and souvenirs.

Seven Sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church

This historic Roman Catholic church was founded in 1755 along with the original settlement. The current Gothic Revival church was built in 1892 and features stunning architecture and stained glass windows. It continues to serve as an active parish church for the community.

Middletown Amtrak Station

This historic train station was built in 1900 and served the Pennsylvania Railroad. Though passenger service ended in the 1970s, Amtrak revived service to Middletown in 1997. The building was restored in 2010. The station is served by Amtrak's Keystone Service between Harrisburg and Philadelphia.
