History of Manheim

Manheim was founded in 1762 by Henry William Stiegel, an early ironmaster. Stiegel established an iron furnace and manufacturing facilities in the area, building a company town around it. The town was originally named Stiegelstown but was later renamed Manheim after the city of Mannheim in Germany. Stiegel went bankrupt in 1769, but Manheim continued to grow as a center of commerce and transportation.

By the late 1800s, Manheim was an important railroad junction between Philadelphia and Harrisburg. It was home to extensive railroad maintenance shops and facilities. Passenger and freight trains passed through Manheim, fueling its development. The railroad industry created many jobs and spurred the growth of downtown businesses.
