Lower Merion is a township in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. With a population of 57,825 as of the 2010 census, it is one of the largest and most historic communities in the Philadelphia Main Line suburbs. Lower Merion has a rich history dating back to the 17th century when it was founded by Welsh settlers. History

Lower Merion was first settled in 1682 and incorporated as a township in 1707. It was named after the historic Welsh county of Merionethshire. The Merion Friends Meeting House, built in 1695, is one of the oldest places of worship in Pennsylvania and remains an active Quaker meeting house to this day. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Lower Merion became a prosperous farming area dotted with water-powered mills along Mill Creek. The construction of the Philadelphia Main Line railroad in the second half of the 19th century transformed Lower Merion into a commuter suburb connected to downtown Philadelphia.
