Hempfield Township completely surrounds the city of Greensburg, the county seat. Although the township does not have its own separate municipal government, it is the most populated part of Westmoreland County.

Hempfield Township is located at 40.2977599°N 79.5580937°W. It is bordered by Manor Township to the north, east and west, and by Penn Township to the south. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 45.0 square miles (116.5 km2), all of it land.
