Haverford is a township located in Delaware County, Pennsylvania approximately 10 miles west of Philadelphia. According to the 2020 census, Haverford has a population of 50,102 making it one of the larger townships in Delaware County.

History of Haverford

Haverford was founded in 1688 and incorporated as a township in 1911. The name Haverford comes from the name of Haverfordwest in Wales, the native home of early settler John ap Edward. Haverford was originally inhabited by Lenape Native Americans before European settlers arrived in the late 17th century.

As of the 2020 census, Haverford Township had a population of 50,102 residents. The racial makeup of the township is approximately 85.7% White, 6.3% Asian, 4.2% Black or African American, 2.8% Hispanic or Latino, 0.3% Native American, and 0.6% two or more races.

Haverford saw rapid population grown in the early 20th century as many Philadelphians moved to the suburbs. The population peaked in 1970 at around 62,000 residents and has declined slightly since then as average household sizes have decreased.
