Harrisburg is the capital city of the U.S. state of Pennsylvania and the county seat of Dauphin County. With a population of 49,229 as of the 2020 census, it is the 15th largest city in Pennsylvania. Harrisburg lies on the east bank of the Susquehanna River, 105 miles west of Philadelphia.

History

Harrisburg's site along the Susquehanna River had been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years prior to European settlement. It was settled by John Harris, Sr. in 1719, who named it Harris's Ferry. During the American Revolution, Harrisburg served as a strategic point for supplies and troops during the Continental Army's 1777 Philadelphia campaign. It was incorporated as a borough in 1791 and chartered as a city in 1860. After the American Civil War, it grew rapidly into a major railroad hub and industrial center.

Harrisburg is located in south central Pennsylvania at coordinates 40.2731911, -76.8867008. It has a total area of 11.86 square miles, of which 8.11 square miles is land and 3.75 square miles is water. The city sits at an elevation of 361 feet above sea level.

Harrisburg has a humid continental climate with hot, humid summers and cold winters. July is the warmest month with an average high temperature of 87°F, while January is the coldest month with an average low of 20°F. The city averages around 40 inches of rainfall per year. Occasional severe weather from nor'easters and hurricanes can impact the region.

Demographics

According to the 2020 census, Harrisburg had a population of 49,229 people across 19,018 households. The racial makeup of the city was 52.5% White, 30.5% African American, 4.3% Asian, 0.4% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 7.7% from other races, and 4.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race made up 15.8% of the population.

There were 19,018 households, of which 27.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. The average household size was 2.43 people, and the average family size was 3.02 people. The median age in the city was 34.3 years.
