History of Falls

Falls has a long history dating back to the 17th century. The area was originally inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. European settlers began arriving in the late 1600s. Falls Township was established in 1684 and originally included land on both sides of the Delaware River. The village of Fallsington grew up around a gristmill built in 1690. Falls became an important stop along the King's Highway between New York and Philadelphia. The Delaware Canal was built through the area in the early 1800s, furthering economic growth. In the 19th century, Falls became an important center for industry including mills, foundries, distilleries, breweries and textile factories. The town of Falls Borough was incorporated in 1892 when it separated from Falls Township. In the 1950s, residential and commercial development expanded greatly. Today, Falls continues to grow as both a suburb of Philadelphia and a destination in its own right. For more on the history of Falls, visit the Falls Wikipedia page.
