Erie is a city located in northwestern Pennsylvania along the shores of Lake Erie. With a population of around 98,000 as of 2021, it is the state's fourth-largest city behind Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Allentown. Erie was incorporated as a borough in 1805 and as a city in 1851. It was named after the adjacent lake, which in turn was named after the Erie people, a Native American tribe that once inhabited the area.

History

Humans have inhabited the Erie area for over 12,000 years, with the earliest known inhabitants being Paleo-Indians who hunted big game like wooly mammoth. In the mid-1700s, the area was claimed by both New York and Pennsylvania, with each colony issuing land grants to settlers. This led to armed conflict known as the Pennamite-Yankee Wars. Pennsylvania eventually retained the land after the territorial dispute was finally settled in 1792.

Erie's location along Lake Erie made it an important port city. The opening of the Erie Canal in 1825 further boosted trade and commerce. Shipbuilding, iron manufacturing, and railroad equipment industries drove Erie's economy in the late 1800s. Today, the major industries are health care, plastics, tourism, and higher education.
