History of Chester

Chester was founded in 1644 by Swedish, Dutch, and British settlers. It was originally called Upland until it was renamed Chester in 1682 after the English port city with the same name. Chester played an important role in the American Revolution as a supply hub for George Washington's Continental Army. The city also had shipyards that contributed to the war effort.
