Altoona is a city located in Blair County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. According to the 2020 census, the population of Altoona is 43,702 residents. Altoona is the principal city of the Altoona Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes all of Blair County, with a population of around 123,812 people.

History

Altoona was founded by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1849 as the site for a shop and maintenance complex. Altoona was incorporated as a borough on February 6, 1854, and as a city under legislation approved on April 3, 1867. The railroad shops proved to be an economic success, and by the 1880s the city grew significantly in population.

As of the 2020 census, there were 43,702 people living in Altoona. The racial makeup of the city was 89.7% White, 5.0% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino people of any race were 3.4% of the population.

Economy

Historically, Altoona was a major railroad center and industrial hub. While the railroad maintenance facilities are no longer the driving economic force they once were, the city still has a diverse industrial base. Major employers in Altoona include health care providers UPMC Altoona and Conemaugh Health System, rail car manufacturer Nefco, brewer Iron City Beer, and paper products company First Quality.
