History of Allentown

Allentown was formally incorporated as a city on March 12, 1867. However, its origins date back much further. The land that became Allentown was originally inhabited by the Lenape Native Americans. In 1736, William Allen, then mayor of Philadelphia, purchased 5,000 acres of land in the area. He named it "Northampton Towne" after Northampton County, which included present-day Lehigh County at the time. Allen hoped the land would become profitable, but that did not occur in his lifetime. It was his son who profited from the sale and development of the land. The town was renamed Allentown in 1838.
