Tigard, Oregon is a city located in Washington County in the U.S. state of Oregon. As of 2019, the population of Tigard was estimated to be 54,595 people, making it one of the larger suburbs of Portland.

History

The original inhabitants of the Tigard area were the Atfalati tribe of the Kalapuya Native Americans. The land that is now Tigard was opened up for settlement in the early 1850s. The first major settler was Wilson M. King, who took a land claim in 1850. In 1886, the Oregon and California Railroad was built near King's land, and a railroad station was constructed. A town began growing around the station, which was referred to as Tigardville. The origin of the name is disputed, but it may have been named after Wilson King's son-in-law, James D. Tigard.

Tigardville was platted in 1888 by George F. Trotter, and a post office was established that year. In 1907, Tigardville unincorporated from Washington County and incorporated as the City of Tigard. Throughout the 20th century, the city grew steadily as the Portland metropolitan area expanded. Major companies like Shoe Machine Company and Montana & Oregon Land Improvement Company established factories in Tigard in the early 1900s. In the 1990s, downtown Tigard was revitalized with construction along Main Street. Today, Tigard remains an important suburb in the Portland region.
