Springfield is a city located in Lane County in the U.S. state of Oregon. With a population of over 60,000 as of 2019 according to Wikipedia, it is the second most populous city in the Eugene-Springfield metropolitan area after Eugene.

History

Springfield was established in 1848 by Elias and Mary Briggs and Elias's father. They were among the first party to come over the southern route of the Oregon Trail. The Briggs family arrived in Oregon in October 1847 and settled temporarily 10 miles west of Springfield, which at the time did not yet have a name. Elias Briggs along with William Stevens ran a ferry on the nearby Willamette River before establishing a trading post at Springfield in 1848. The trading post provided supplies to travelers headed to the California Gold Rush.

Springfield is located on the Willamette River and Interstate 5 runs through the center of town. It has a total area of 15.75 square miles. As of 2019, the population was estimated at 61,893 according to the City of Springfield website. The city is part of the Springfield School District and is home to the University of Oregon campus.
