With a population of 36,478 as of the 2020 census, Oregon City is the county seat of Clackamas County, Oregon. It is located on the Willamette River near the southern limits of the Portland metropolitan area.

History

Oregon City was the first city in the Oregon Territory, incorporated in 1844. It was established by Dr. John McLoughlin, who was the chief factor of the Columbia Department of the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Vancouver. He built a warehouse and residence in Oregon City in the 1840s and was later known as the "Father of Oregon".

Oregon City was the end point for the historic Oregon Trail and was the capital of the Oregon Territory from its establishment in 1848 until 1851. The first major toll bridge in the Pacific Northwest was completed crossing the Willamette River at Oregon City in 1922.

Oregon City has numerous historic buildings and structures within its limits. The McLoughlin House, built in 1845, was purchased and restored by the Oregon City Heritage Association and opened to the public as a museum in 1909. It is one of the oldest structures in the Pacific Northwest. The End of the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center helps tell the story of the Oregon Trail immigrants who ended their journey in Oregon City. It is managed by Metro, the regional government body of the Oregon portion of the Portland metropolitan area.
