With a population of over 108,000 as of 2019 according to the Wikipedia page on Hillsboro, Hillsboro is the fifth-largest city in Oregon. Nestled in the fertile Tualatin Valley about 20 miles west of downtown Portland, Hillsboro has grown rapidly in recent decades as a hub for the high-tech industry while retaining connections to its agricultural roots.

History

The area around Hillsboro was originally inhabited by the Atfalati tribe of the Kalapuya Native Americans. White settlers began arriving in the early 19th century, establishing the community of Columbia that was later renamed Hillsborough after investors from Hillsborough, North Carolina. Hillsboro was incorporated as a city in 1876. Early settlers were drawn by the rich farmland, starting out by growing wheat but later shifting to focus more on fruits, vegetables, and dairy. The arrival of the Oregon & California Railroad in 1872 connected Hillsboro with outside markets, fueling further growth. For much of its early history, Hillsboro served as the county seat of Washington County until it was moved to nearby Forest Grove in 1914.

After World War II, the rise of the high-tech industry transformed Hillsboro from an agricultural hub to a center of technology and innovation. In the 1950s, Tektronix Inc. established its headquarters in Hillsboro, attracting skilled engineers and technicians. The establishment of Intel's large semiconductor facility in the 1970s ushered in further high-tech development. Over the following decades, Hillsboro expanded rapidly as more technology companies set up operations to create a vibrant hub that is sometimes referred to as the "Silicon Forest."
